In the mid – day of today been 16th October, 2020, Gwagwalada Abuja became like an eye of the niddle to those that must make it a passage either from Abuja to Lokoja or from Lokoja to Abuja due to blockage which appeared to be a total lockdown of the road.
Motorist were seen struggling to maneuver their way through, while some were completely on stand still. Vehicles of various types including Trucks, Tippers, Buses and Cars were seen competing space with one another in their bids to get to their destinations.
While our reporter was finding out reason for the total shut down of the road, which is a major road linking the eastern and southern states with the federal capital territory and other northern states, it was discovered that their was a fatal accident on the road at the early hours of the day and that led to the hold up.
A driver who was an eye witness simply identified as Isa Muhammed explained that two trailers sandwiched a small truck in between them squeezing out the car to the hurt of the driver while another car had already been hit and forced into the flowing rushing water under the bridge that the accident occurred.
Another eye witness, Tony Inamani confirmed the same story but added that there was a group of youth protesting End SARS that blocked the road earlier causing hold up in addition to the holdup that already exist daily due to pot holes on the road. Then the accident took place in the middle of the protest.
The officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Andrew Timothy and Alhasan Basha who were at the scene of the accident gave a report that one person was rescued and taken to the hospital while the trailer was removed from the road to ease the flow of traffic.
Interviewing the men of the Nigerian Police, the Divisional Traffic Officer 2, Asp Stephen Alleh explained that the accident had occurred before their arrival but at investigation, only one passenger was in the vehicle that plunged into the river and he was rescued and taken to the hospital while the trailer has been impounded.
The DTO 1, DSP Ahmed Jagaba explained that the driver of the trailer, identified as Usuf Abdullahi who was heading towards Lokoja fully loaded with goods has been arrested and in custody with the trailer impounded in the Divisional Police Headquarter ,Gwagwalada for further investigation and possible prosecution. DSP Ahmed Jagaba confirmed the car plunged into the river as Golf 3 with registration number, NIGER SUL 348 ES, that the victim of the said car was rescued but dead.
He confirmed that another victim was badly injured but taken to the hospital and he survived. He however advised that drivers drives with patience and avoid dangerous substances and alcohol before engaging in driving.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Gwagwalada Division confirmed the accident and the rescue of the victim and says the driver of the trailer that hit the vehicle shall be charged to court. He also said the trailer has been faulted for break failure but investigation continues. There after, he shall be charged to court. He was satisfied that the road has been cleared for motorists.
The hold up was seen been cleared and motorists were seen driving freely in and out of Abuja from 7pm making the road blockage lasting for over 7 hours.
Gwagwalada road has become a pain on the neck to motorist on a daily basis in the last few months. The fear of residents and motorists is the fact that Christmas season is approaching and if nothing is done concerning the bad spots on the road, motorists that would want to ply same road might begin preparation to sleep for hours in gwagwalada hold up during the Yuletide season. Government are requested by concerned Nigerians to intervene.
