One of the drivers who spoke with our correspondent said he had been in the hold up since 3pm on Friday and till the time this report is been filed, around 10.30pm, the gridlock has not abated. The motorist simply identified as Pastor Joseph who has been in the hold up for more than seven hours already confirmed that the road had been an issue for a long time now and a nightmare by the day.

Vehicles were seen battling for a passage and the men of the Federal Road Safety Commission of which none could be available to speak to the press were seen controlling the traffic under a serious pressure.

The bridge connecting the Asaba and Onitsha community is  being identified as one of the reasons for the regular gridlock due to its size and the numbers of motorists that plies the road daily. It is the major bridge that connect the eastern part of Nigeria with other parts of the country.

Motorist fears that trouble looms as worse situation await motorists in the forth coming Christmas celebrations which many people would need the same road as they move from one place to another to celebrate the Christmas season. They therefore pleaded with the government for quick intervention.

Meanwhile, as motorists were being advised to opt for alternative routes and to avoid the Asaba/Onitsha road for Saturday use other alternative routes cried out as it becomes difficult to identify other routes that could serve as alternative as they are all in a deplorable situations. Such roads includes Onitsha to Enugu, Enugu to Night mile, to Otukpo, Markurdi etc. Asaba to Auchi, to Okpella, Okenne, Lokoja are also having spots that hold motorists to ransome for hours thereby destroying plans and frustrating motorists. Each of them has many hours to waste for motorists due to their bad conditions.
