The Police Command in Ekiti has confirmed killing of its officer on Thursday when armed robbers attacked a bank in Otun Ekiti, Headquarters of Moba Local Government Area of the state.
Several residents were also injured in the attack..
The late police officer was until his death, one of the security operatives attached to guard the bank.
A local source told newsmen that the robbers stormed the bank at about 5:00pm and began shooting sporadically into the air to scare residents.
During the period the shooting lasted, staff of the bank and customers still left behind after the normal closing hours, were said to have ran in different directions for fear of being killed.
The robbers later reportedly made their way into the banking hall, using dynamite and moved away undisclosed huge sums, parked in sacks after the operation.
Another source said the incident would be the second of its kind in two years, during which four persons were killed.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Sunday Abutu who confirmed the incident, said the robbers attacked the bank with dynamite, but he denied knowledge of hoodlums gaining entry into the bank.
He said men of the command and military men attached to the boundary town, engaged the robbers in a duel which he said, resulted in the loss of one of the mobile police at the scene.
“ It is true there was a bank robbery incident today in Otun-Ekiti at about 5:00 pm.
” In the shootout between our men and the robbers, we unfortunately lost one of our men.
” The commissioner of police has ordered discrete investigations into the incident to ensure the armed robbers are arrested and brought to book,” he said.
He urged members of the public to go about their normal businesses and be rest assured of police readiness to protect their lives and property at all times
